PSHE

At Jewell Academy, personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.
At Jewell Academy we follow the ‘Jigsaw Programme’, which brings together PSHE education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive and progressive scheme of learning. We actively promote British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs to prepare our pupils for life in modern day Britain. PSHE education also makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety, and to their emotional wellbeing. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth, confidence and resilience by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
implementation
PSHE is taught weekly, using the Jigsaw scheme of work which uses a mindful approach to PSHE and RSHE.
In July 2019, The Department for Education released a document changing the previous Sex and Relationship (SRE) guidance to the new Relationships, Sex and Health guidance (RSHE). Relationships, Sex and Health Education provides pupils with the knowledge of physical, sexual, moral and emotional development. The curriculum equips our children with an age-appropriate understanding of the importance of stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care for family life. Following consultation with our parents, we will be implementing the new RSHE curriculum into our PSHE lessons (and wider curriculum where appropriate) and we will be using the Jigsaw RSHE scheme to help us deliver these objectives.
