Geography

INTENT

We want pupils to leave Jewell Academy with enquiring minds so it is our intent that the Geography curriculum will inspire pupils to be curious and develop a fascination about the world, its people and their own place within it. Developing geographical skills is essential as our pupils live in a world that is wide open to them, with opportunities to travel and work in different cities and countries.  Pupils learn in challenging and engaging lessons which will equip them with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. They will gain a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. 

Our Geography curriculum encourages creative thinking and celebrates diversity to ensure cross curricular links with PSHE, contributing to the cultural, social, spiritual and moral life of children as they acquire knowledge of a range of different cultures and traditions. They will learn tolerance and understanding of other people within the local community enabling them to be active citizens in modern Britain and in the wider world (SMCS). 

Other cross curricular links are made through the expectation of high quality writing (English) when completing Topic Writes, understanding and using scales and grid references as well as data collection skills (maths) when reading and using maps. Links with History are also made when looking at how the Geography of places have changed over time, e.g. when studying the Romans. Creative links are made within Art and Design Technology projects.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Jewell Academy, we create fun and engaging cycles of lessons for each Geography topic, which carefully plan for progression and depth concentrating on the geographical skills suited to the age group; higher order thinking questions and extension activities to challenge and stretch pupils whilst applying their learning.

Through our No Limits Curriculum, specifically The Real World element, pupils are able to see how what they are learning is grounded in a context. They develop the knowledge and skills to be active and successful 21st century citizens by focusing on:

• Project Management;
• Reflection.
